Hooked

Fabricating a hidden coat rack

Concept: As part of my digital fabrication class at ITP, I made a wooden coat rack for the home.  I wanted the piece to be simple, elegant and functional. The design was inspired by an image I had seen on a design blog.

Created with: Illustrator, CNC wood router, birch plywood (3/4" thick).

Final measurements: 17.25 x 14 x 2.5 inches. 14 hooks (7 top, 7 bottom).

Skills: Illustrator, Fabrication, Prototyping.

Fabrication

The rack was made with birch plywood and consisted of 14 hooks which were all designed on Illustrator and cut on the CNC wood router.

Hooks and supporting beams were cut using a quarter inch drill bit. The side of the birch plywood would make the front of the piece. The drilled hole is where a rod would be inserted to keep all 24 pieces of wood in place.

Drilled on the CNC wood router.

Files were transferred from Illustrator to the CNC software (McMaster), which would cut to exact measurements.
